You forgot something…

For me, I have one good way of remembering things. I make lists in my head. These lists can be short, medium or long… usually depending upon the time frame I have to complete the list.

Yesterday, I had a kind-of short list, but a list of things that I had to gather up very quickly. My car was idling in my driveway. Audrey was in my car with her 4 boys. William was telling her all about what happened at pre-school. Alex was hungry. Benjamin was crying for milk. Henry had been in his car seat for too long. Audrey had to get home quickly… but there were a few things at my house that she needed. And I was headed to an appointment with my mom after I dropped off Audrey and the boys. (And by the way, we had made a quick run to Target before all this happened)

This was my mental list:

Audrey’s laptop, Audrey’s cord, Audrey’s diaper bag, 2 sippy cups of milk, a bottle for Henry, a bottle of water for Audrey, a couple of rolls of paper towels that Audrey forgot to buy at Target and 3 granola bars.

My list also included changing from running shorts with the built-in panties into pants that would not embarrass my mom at her doctor’s appointment. (Yes, even as a grandma, I still can embarrass my own mom.)

I bolted into my house, hit the lavette quickly, took off my shorts with the built-in panties, hung them on the doorknob… and set about completing my list. One by one, like a bolt of lightning, I gathered everything.

Within seconds, I was standing with my hand on the kitchen door… making a quick last-second assessment of my list. I turned the knob, but just had that funny feeling that I had forgotten something.

Well, I had. My pants. I was standing there with bags of stuff. Naked from the waist down. I started laughing so hard that I had to put everything down. And I laughed all the way upstairs to get my presentable pants.

Once in the car, Audrey asked, “Did you get everything?”

And I burst into laughter again. I told her the story… and we both laughed. I should tell you here that I live on a main street. With close neighbors. People. Lots of people who would not know that “putting on pants” was the one thing that I forgot to put on my list.

  • That’s my girl!

  • You’re not alone, because I have definitely done this before. I hate ironing, so I will often take the lazy way out and just toss a pair of pants or skirt into the dryer in the morning to get rid of wrinkles. One morning, I was about to head out the door wearing nothing but a blouse and underwear. Luckily I caught myself before pulling open the door! I was definitely laughing about it for the rest of the day.

  • At least you laughed about it and kept on going. I think the day I forget to put pants on I would end up crawling back in bed and calling it a day.

  • Oh my land. That’s totally something I would do…or at least something I’d laugh if I saw you do :)

  • That’s so funny! Good thing you had that feeling; that probably would have really embarrassed your mom at the appointment. :-) I make lists for everything too, but I have to write them down!

  • Oh, Sharon! That was too funny!! Thank you for sharing. I love the doses of laughter you provide! Definitely made my evening! :)
