An accident with an Edy’s Strawberry Fruit Bar

An Edy’s Strawberry Fruit Bar bit my tongue. Not kidding.
I know. I know. It’s usually the other way around.
But sometimes love hurts. And this is one such time.
I remember the first time we met… Edy’s Fruit Bars and me. It was summer. It was hot. It was magic when I saw something in the frozen foods aisle that looked grown-up. Like me.
Edy’s “All Natural” Fruit Bars… in a rainbow of flavors. Strawberry. Lemon. Lime. Grape.
I bought a box of each, but Strawberry would become my passion. I looked forward to my Strawberry Fruit Bar each night. Sometimes dessert. Sometimes a treat. (And sometimes even breakfast.) OK. OK. I’ve been known to eat 3, maybe even 4, at one sitting.
My husband, who is not the jealous type, once stocked our entire freezer with my secret little passion for Edy’s Strawberry Fruit Bars as a birthday gift. What a guy.
This is when my grandchildren discovered my “other” love. Grandma’s freezer filled with Fruit Bars does give a bit of a hint, no? That is the day I began to share… and now, when my grandkids come to my home, Edy comes along for the visit because Edy’s Fruit Bars are not just for grown-ups.
But last night was a grown-up treat night. My husband was in Boston at Game 5 between the Celtics and the Magic and was texting me regular updates (the Celtics would make perhaps the greatest 4th quarter comeback in NBA playoff history and win the game!). 4 of my 9 grandchildren had been visiting earlier and each one had enjoyed an Edy’s Fruit Bar.
This is where it gets scary.
I grabbed a Strawberry Fruit Bar from my freezer. I unwrapped it. I sat down at my computer. I took a first delectable bite. I screamed.
Something had pierced my tongue.

I looked at the Fruit Bar as blood trickled from my mouth. I had stabbed my tongue on a fractured piece of stick that was lodged at the tip of the Fruit Bar. And I noticed that another stick was lodged diagonally through the center of the bar. All I could think was, “THANK GOODNESS ONE OF THE KIDS DIDN’T BITE INTO THIS.”

Now, let me explain something. I am not into bashing manufacturers. I gave this post a great deal of thought, and I’m writing it only to possibly prevent this from happening to someone else. Especially to a child. I thought first of contacting Edy’s directly, but then thought that this process may take weeks. I am posting here to let Edy’s know that a random shattered fruit bar stick pierced my tongue. It has never happened to me before. But I don’t want it to happen again. My advice is for consumers to check the basic structure of an Edy’s Fruit Bar before eating it… and most especially before giving one to a child. Something happened during the manufacturing process that is potentially dangerous…
I will say here that I did open another Edy’s Strawberry Fruit Bar last night, and it was perfect. My love affair will continue… but with a bit of caution. Love shouldn’t hurt, right!?

Wow. I know in mass production that crazy things can happen, but wow. I hope you get some kind of answer from the Edy’s folks quickly.
Ouch! I love those fruit bars, too, but I’m with you on being thankful one of the kids didn’t get that one.
OUCH!
Wow, That’s crazy! I will definitely check out my ice cream bars before eating.
Thanks for the warning! Your post is well written, and Edy’s should be thanking you too! Now I am craving a fruit bar. LOL
I am so glad you are ok, as well as the kids! Have you heard from Edy’s? Remember when Arianne’s Mom found an EARRING in her oatmeal??
Steph
OUCH! That made me cringe just reading it! Those Edy’s bars are a huge favorite at our house, too, so we’ll have to be careful!
I bet that hurt. You might want to consider contacting Edy’s. You may get a big supply of your favorite treat to keep you happy. Just a thought.
I work in a manufacturing facility (NOT Edy’s) and you should contact them directly if you have not already. I doubt it would take them weeks to respond. If you still have the box they will most likely want the code date and manufacturing information to narrow it down and see what plant it was made in, and the run. Most manufacturers take things like this quite seriously – it could be a bad run of sticks from their stick vendor or an issue with a machine or who knows what else – and they won’t know there is a problem unless someone tells them.
Arkie Girl… Yours is a great suggestion, and I’m appreciative that you took the time to respond. I will reach out to Edy’s and I do have the box if they need the code date information. I am grateful to know that this information matters and could help in identifying the plant and/or stick vendor or machine. Again, thank you so very much…
Sharon
Wow yeah never thought about that happening before
and yes I share that love affair for Edy’s Strawberry fruit bars too
And have been know to eat many at a time. They are so addicting.
UGH! I love these and we have them in the freezer quite often. Sorry you were “bitten” by the fruit bar and thankful that it wasn’t a little one!
I’m always so careful with my kids and food. I recall my youngest daughter having a little bag of Smartfood popcorn at a school function several years ago. She said it tasted “icky” and we found a DIME in her mouth. Somehow they were throwing money in the bags? Not likely…but it made me very aware after that.
Great post. Now I’m hungry.
Just to let everyone know, I did contact Edy’s at edys.com, posted a detailed comment and linked to my post. The site is very welcoming and encourages accuracy by asking specifically for UPC Code, Best-by-Date info and Manufacturing Code. I still have the box and all the information is clearly printed and detailed, enabling me to pass it along. Again, I thank Arkie Girl for taking the time to comment. Whether there is or isn’t another splintered fruit bar stick out there somewhere, Edy’s will be able to address the problem in the most specific way. This makes me feel rather good about food manufacturing. I will let everyone know when I hear from Edy’s. In the meantime, it’s breakfast time… and I’m off to have an Edy’s Strawberry Fruit Bar!
-Best, Sharon
Ouch! I love the lime ones! Glad you warned us about this! I will check all of my frozen treats from now on. I hope it didn’t leave you with a lisp!
Wow, I just found your post because my wife’s tongue started bleeding while we were eating the tangerine kind and I was doing a search to see if it’s happened to anyone else. Nice pictures. We didn’t see anything in hers other than the fruit. It’s our first time trying the bars and I have to agree that they do taste good. Tomorrow I’ll be trying the strawberry one.
Yikes! Thanks for the heads up and good reminder to look before I eat! Sorry for your trouble!
I love these fruit bars too (strawberry is definitely my favorite as well!). But it’s scary how these things can happen. Thanks for the information! I hope your tongue is feeling okay. I will definitely be on the lookout from now on.
Love hurts a little.
But totally worth it, especially if strawberries are involved.
I found a mangled up gold earring in a Goldfish Cracker, once…it still had the back-piece on. I cried a bit, thinking of exactly how it had gotten there from some unfortunate ear.
i found a prize in a box of cracker jack one time.
I was reading Tim’s message and for some reason the Tangerine flavor makes my tongue bleed as well. It’s strange at first I thought perhaps it came from my teeth but at a closer look my tongue was bleeding. I contacted the manufacture which happens to be Dreyer’s on the west coast and Edy’s on the east coast. There certainly wasn’t a piece of glass in my fruit bar, so what ever makes it bleed I hope to find out soon.
