APRIL SHOWER your kids with WORD POWER today!
Today’s WORD: gneiss
Here’s a little clue to the meaning of gneiss: gnats, gnomes and gnus might gnaw on gnaphalium, gnetales or gnetum, but do they gnash their teeth on gneiss?
(Hint: gnaphalium, gnetales and gnetum are plants)
Give up? OK.
gneiss is a noun meaning a laminated metamorphic rock similar to granite – pronounced nice.
gneiss is among some of the oldest rock in the world and many are known for their layers and crystallization. The word gneiss may have derived from the verb gneist, which means to spark.
It’s fun to learn new words and where they come from. It’s kinda nice to know gneiss!
(But, hey… do gnats have teeth?)
(In any case, gnats surely seem to have crinigerous legs!)
