I’m honored, honored, honored to be working with Clorox and their Check-in for Checkups campaign. This is EXACTLY the kind of stuff that makes me proud to be a digital mom and be able to use social media for GOOD!
Not sure if you knew this, but TODAY is the second annual Global Social Media Day, which is sponsored by Mashable. This global event is a celebration of the technological advancements that enable everyone to connect with real-time information, communicate from miles apart and have their voices be heard. Social Media Day meetups will be taking place across the country tomorrow to celebrate the importance of the world’s online communities.
Check-in for Checkups is a great of example of people are using social media for social good and shows how activists (bloggers, celebrities, moms and dads, everyone!) from all over the country are connecting to inspire change for disadvantaged children. It’s incredible!
I have become fully immersed in my Check-in for Checkups. I have committed to this campaign and have been doing something every single day! I feel like a new person. I really, really do. For the last year I have been trying (endlessly) to keep myself on track and accountable for adding in some fitness and exercise into my life. It’s not easy when you have a rockstar mom, sister, sister in laws, brothers and husband who run 5K’s, 10K’s, marathons, swim, cycle and do triathlons for fun. Kind of hard to keep up with total hardcore stuff like that! But… I do know I need to do something healthy for myself, not only for the physical side of it, but for the mental/emotional, too. I was a swimmer for a good portion of my childhood/teenage years and I was so used to and programmed to working out (hard) 3-4 hours a day, 7 days a week… that when I had the chance to sort of break-free from that crazy routine and schedule, I did. And I did in a big way, so much so where I never went back to a normal and continuous routine.
Well, that’s been changing.
I have committed to walking 30 minutes every day. And if it’s not walking 30 minutes, it’s doing something ultra and athletic and good for me for 30 minutes. I’m doing this for myself and to inspire and help others. I have to say, I’ve had a blast finding ways to fit this into my life and stick with it over the last week and a half, and I haven’t missed a day!
I continuously walked for the first week, either every morning or every night. I made sure I fit it in, no questions asked.
Then when we went to New Hampshire 2 weeks ago, and I didn’t know the lay of the land too well in the area where we were staying, so I figured, OK… I’ve got to do something, so let’s make something count for 30 minutes. And so, I did. Saturday I walked for an hour all around Mount Cranmore and it was amazing and hard and very fun to do. On Sunday, we drove to the top of Mount Washington and we walked all around the top for a good 30 minutes, taking photos and showing the kids the different sights up there. And after that, my mind shifted… why am I just trying to walk? There’s so much more! I could be biking, swimming, running, doing classes at the YMCA, surfing with the boys, walking on the beach… I started to expand my check-in horizons!
I love this campaign because it’s really making me do something for myself because I know something good comes from it for someone else. It’s as easy as that. Social media doing GOOD.
