Fashion Sharing Parties

This afternoon, I went through my closets (like an animal looking for food!) trying to find one of my favorite black turtlenecks. I couldn’t find it anywhere. I mean, ANYWHERE.

And then my mother stopped by… and low and behold, it was on her. Yes, my friends, on her.

I really wasn’t mad at all, just glad the mystery had been solved. I had forgotten that I’d given it to her to borrow for her weekend away with my father.

And it actually gave me a great idea for today’s Fashion Advice for Moms post: The importance (nay, necessity) of sharing clothing.

Growing up with my sister, Jane, we shared clothes like champs. Tops. Bottoms. Dresses. Skirts. You name it, we shared it. I loved it. Whenever one of us would go shopping, it would be like we both hit the mother load. Whatever Jane would get, I knew would be for me, too. And vice versa.

So here’s my Fashion Advice for Moms today, Day #42: share your clothing. Financially, it just makes so much sense.

Find some girlfriends and start some F.S.P.s – Fashion Sharing Parties.

I used to share clothing all the time when I was in college and when I lived in NYC. My girlfriends and I would get together, each bringing a bag of clothes, and we would swap around. Then we’d all have fresh, “new,” fabulous clothes for a month. For free!

The only promise? No stains. No holes. No losing. (It may be a good idea to set some informal “rules” if one of these promises is broken.)

Change things up a bit. Try some styles you’d normally shy away from. And just have some fun!

I think that would be kind of hard for me, I am so small and petite, besides my friends are far from me. I have one around here, but she is way older than me, she is 63. hehehe… 🙂

I like your idea though. I love visiting your blog for more fashion tips.

I think it’s a great idea. When I was in college, it was like having one giant closet. It would be harder now. I have the same problem as Adin. I’m small and thin. Most of my friends aren’t.

    I take my mom’s hand-me-downs. 🙂

She has good taste, and more money than me at this stage of life. She renews her wardrobe often so I get lots of good things. I usually have to rework them a bit to make them appropriate for my age, but for the most part they’re staples like solid tops and such.

I love this idea. Friends have told me about doing this and have had so much fun. So when is our FSP party? Seriously, we may have to do this in the spring.

Great idea, Audrey! You can also have themed fashion swaps (e.g. formalwear, black-and-white, sundresses) or if you and your friends are not similar in size, have an accessory swap, purse swap, costume jewelry swap, even a shoe swap. You still freshen up your wardrobe and all your different-sizes girlfriends can participate. We actually have an accessory swap party plan on our site, if anyone wants details on how to do it.
I’m really enjoying your series of tips. I am going to add you to our links right now!

That’s too funny that your mom showed up wearing the sweater. Sharing is a great idea! We used to do that in college all the time – especially whenever there was an event. You were sure to find about a dozen girls out in the hallway mixing and matching outfits. 🙂
