APRIL SHOWERS bring WORD POWERS

“Sweet April showers do spring May flowers” is a lovely quote by 16th century English poet and farmer Thomas Tusser, who wrote the instructional poem Five Hundred Points of Good Husbandry. Tusser’s poem is a witty, lively and entertaining poem about gardening and many of his quotes are still used today.

April Showers bring work powers

We’re going to borrow Thomas Tusser’s April thought, but turn it to WORDS instead.

Literacy for Kids – Easy, Fun & Completely Do-able and APRIL IS RAINING WORDS. Check in each day in April to find a fabulous word to share with your children or students because 5 minutes of April Showers bring Word Powers!

Kids LOVE words.  Kids love to KNOW words.  I taught both excited and reluctant learners for 30 years and I KNOW that words entice, inspire, entertain and move kids.  Kids cannot get excited about WORDS if we don’t give them WORDS.  It’s so very easy for us to give kids the gift of WORDS to start them on their way to great enjoyment and great LITERACY.

Let’s begin today, April 1, with the longest word in the English dictionary: pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis

Wow, you say?

First, pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is a noun meaning a lung disorder caused by the inhalation of ultramicroscopic particles of fine silica dust.

Second, here is a pronunciation guide – noo-muh-noh-uhl-truh-mahy-kruh-skop-ik-sil-i-koh-vol-key-noh-koh-nee-oh-sis.
Hope this helps a bit. If your kids can read, ask them to find the words within the word – ultra, microscopic, volcano.)

Third, kids will love this word. Kids love figuring out words.  Kids will love saying it.  Kids will love knowing it.  Even very young children will love the sound of this gigantic word.

Last, but far from least, kids will walk away with a great big word in their heads, a word that lights a great big spark to learn more words.

3o April days = 30 WORDS. Remember that Literacy is all about Words – Written.  Spoken.  Felt.

Hope to see you tomorrow.
