Notes to self: How to run a successful school event (without pulling your hair out)

The month of October has been a busy work month… I’ve been traveling every week and just trying the best I can to well… make it all work.  Beyond the work thing, I’ve been trying to keep up with a little thing called – regular life, my 4 sons and all the activities and scheduling that comes along with having 4 sons.  So… because I didn’t have enough to do, I thought it would be fun to sign on to run the Halloween Party at my sons’ school.  Why not, right?  What I didn’t know was that over 400 people come.

Ha.. Ha.. Ha.. you’re kidding me, right?  (They weren’t.)

I’m going to be real here… I’ve been stressing about this Halloween Party for weeks. I’m a newbie at it, whose never been to one of the Halloween parties before and was totally navigating in foreign waters here.  I kinda didn’t want to be the mom that messed up the Halloween Party of 2011.  And it’s funny because I run stuff for a living and have pretty high-pressured situations sometimes, I never get stressed about them – ever… but for a school thing with the PTO, well… yeah. I was.

I literally thought I would be pulling my hair out last night.

I literally thought I would be stressed and a crazed lady running around all night making sure everything was just right.

I literally thought… quite frankly, way too much about it.

The secret to running a successful school event?

It’s a pretty simple formula – make sure the kids are happy. It’s really not about the games or the prizes or the raffles or the weather or too, too much else.

There are 3 things the kids wanted to do at the Halloween Dance:

1. Dress up Check.

2. Dance Check

3. Eat delicious treats Check

Other than that? Nothing really matters.

My sons William and Alexander had a BLAST.  William actually said to me, “Mom, it was the best night of my life. Well, except for when I was born.” I’d say that’s a pretty good testimonial to a successful party.

I even dressed up… I’m not sure people knew who I was… (so I took the sunglasses off and out the Starbuck’s cup down), but Rachel Zoe was there… in full effect…

With my man Matt...

And the boys rocked out their costumes…

With the boys...

So there wasn’t any need to pull my hair out.
There wasn’t any need to be stressed about a school event.

There was though a need to have some FUN, which I did.
