Day 317 of 365 Days of Literacy for Kids:

*November 13th is Sadie Hawkins Day.

Sadie Hawkins is a cartoon character from the comic strip L’il Abner, created in the 1930’s by famous cartoonist and humorist  Al Capp

Sadie is the daughter of Hekzebiah Hawkins, a prominent resident of Dogpatch. Hekzebiah feared that (oh, how politically incorrect) his homely daughter Sadie would never find a man to marry, so he did what he thought best… held a race where all the single men were given a head start.  The man had to marry the woman who caught him.

Hence, Sadie Hawkins Day, a “holiday” created from a cartoon!

Sadie Hawkins Day is recognized as an American folk event in which girls/women take the initiative to ask a boy/man out for a date.  Sadie Hawkins Day became quite the event on college campuses and many high schools still celebrate the “holiday” with special girl-invite dances.

Get your kids and grandkids in on the fun over at the official Li’l Abner website.

(*some sources cite November 12th as Sadie Hawkins Day, but either day is a fffff-uuuuuun day to celebrate!)
