Ziploc Great American FreshOver Project and an EASY recipe plus GIVEAWAY!!!!

With the New Year, thanks to Ziploc Brand’s Great American FreshOver Project, I have committed to preparing and eating fresh and healthy foods in 2012. I want to set a good example for my four sons, especially now that they’re getting older and becoming more active in helping out in the kitchen. What I love about the Great American FreshOver Project is that they’re helping families find easy ways to eat fresh and conveniently.  I’m not a master in the kitchen by any means, so for me, I’ve never been one to branch out from what I know – which are the ultra-basics and has never really included fresh foods. I’m just a total novice here, but I’m ready for the challenge of changing my ways for my family. I especially love that Rachael Ray has partnered with Ziploc Brand for the FreshOver Project because it’s been exciting and helpful to use her tips, recipes and secrets for preparing fresh foods for my family.

I started off the New Year preparing for myself an easy FreshOver recipe from Rachael Ray, Yogurt Crunch. Seriously, this was the perfect speed for me because Rachael Ray coded it as easy, and it looked very beginner. I’m going to be totally honest here, I’ve never made anything like this for myself for breakfast or for a snack because I literally thought it would be too difficult to assemble. Not only was it perfectly easy for me, it was also the most delish treat ever!

The ingredients that I needed were simple:  6 cups of vanilla yogurt, 4 firm granola bars, any flavor (I did oats-n-honey), ½ cup of chopped nuts: walnuts, pecans or hazelnuts, toasted (I used walnuts) and ½ pint of strawberries, hulled and sliced.

I actually added fresh blueberries and raspberries to the recipe, too because I LOVE berries!

The process for making Rachael Ray’s Yogurt Crunch was easy as can be:

  1. Pour yogurt into a bowl
  2. Add granola bars to a Ziploc Brand Storage bag and crush (my sons LOVED this step)
  3. Add to yogurt along with nuts
  4. Stir to combine all ingredients and transfer to bowls (my sons LOVED the mixing, too)
  5. Top with berries and serve

This was the easiest and most convenient breakfast to make, and beyond that – it’s turned into my afternoon snack, too. I’ve been putting it in my small Ziploc Twist ‘n Loc Containers and bringing it to my sons’ swim practice and eating it.  Rather than grabbing unhealthy takeout snacks (which we used to do all the time), I’m fueling myself with healthy, fresh and convenient snacks. Not only that, I’m now giving my two older guys fresh strawberries, fresh blueberries, apple slices and orange wedges as snacks in Ziploc Brand Storage Bags for practice, too.

And the beauty? Once I got going with this, I started to FreshOver everything!  I’m adding fresh foods in everything I prepare at home, it’s amazing what you start to do once you have it on your mind.  Carrot and celery sticks have become the snack of choice now for my guys, which I love seeing.

Eating fresher has never felt so good!

Join me and my family! As part of the FreshOver mission, Ziploc Brand will be donating to Rachael Ray’s non-profit organization – Yum-O!  The incredible mission of Yum-O is to help children across the country develop positive attitudes toward eating fresh. As a family you can support this cause by “pledging” to start your family’s FreshOver project and download Rachael’s exclusive FreshOver Recipe Guide on Facebook.com/Ziploc. *additional details below

I will totally FreshOver breakfast for my family. It’s the most important meal right? Fresh veggies in omelets, fresh fruit in oatmeal, fresh fruit topped waffles (yum), or how about the breads and muffins that can be made with nuts, veggies, and fruit. Ok now I’m hungry and it just so happens to be time for breakfast…let the FreshOver begin!

I am doing a fresh over on snacks. I am packing healthy snacks (cheese, carrots, apples, grapes, blueberries, etc) before we leave the house. This stops is from stopping for junk and unhealthy food when we are on the go!

I have been trying to doing this with my new year goals. Ziploc has been a big help. My favorite one is to buy fruit and veggies for the week and have them all cleaned and cut and ready to eat in Ziploc bags. If you open my fridge, you see bags of washed and stemmed grapes, sliced green peppers and many more snacks ready to go.

I’ve been trying to get my daughters to eat healthier snacks. They always seem to be scavenging the pantry for snacks. I’m finding that if I leave a bowl of fresh fruit out, such as washed grapes or strawberries they are grabbing that instead of getting into the pantry. Making fresh fruit and vegetables easy to grab has really increased how much they are eating!

We definitely need to fresh over after school snacks…we do lots of fresh fruits and veggies the rest of the day, but lots of little packaged snacks get thrown into the diaper bag for after school. We need to get back to basics!

I really want to fresh over the lunches I make for my husband to take to work. I need to get better at including fruits, veggies and ways to make it more healthy. The days I forgot to pack his lunch, he always eats fast food – not healthy at all!

FreshOver here starts with dinner tonight. I will substitute plain yogurt for sour cream, switch from real butter to SmartBalance and skip the breads, sauces and gravies. That will be the hard part. Fresh berries with yogurt for dessert instead of ice cream.
