Swiffer Hockey Cleaning: Best Way to Get the Boys to Clean

Usually when it comes to the cleaning in my house, it’s basically me, myself and I. As the boys have gotten older (they’re 6, 8, 9 and 10) and we’ve added a 5th baby (she’s 18 months) to our home, the cleaning – well, I need help. As a full-time working mom, the last thing I feel like doing at night after the kids are in bed and all my work is done is —- clean. My husband created a chore chart for the boys last weekend that we have committed to sticking with for them. When I was a kid, I helped my mom and dad out with chores, so it’s time (we feel) for the boys to lend a helping hand around the house. Believe me, they weren’t happy. There definitely was some groaning and resistance.

There are a few things in my house on the cleaning front that need to be done every single day (especially with 4 sons):

1. clean the bathrooms
2. clean the kitchen floor
3. clean the living room floor
4. clean the counters

These are my BIG 4.

I don’t mind cleaning the bathrooms, I know they constantly need a good wiping from top to bottom (again, especially with 4 sons!). But the floors? I figured with a Swiffer, these boys could knock those 2 tasks out for me and it would be a BIG help.

So… let me set up last Friday night for you (Valentine’s Day). My husband was cooking me a homemade, romantic meal at home. He told me to go upstairs, lay down and relax while he and the boys cooked and cleaned (honestly, I jumped at the chance!). I heard him ask the boys to clean the floors in the living room. I was ready for a reaction of, “DAD!! COME ON!!”

But all I heard was laughter.

Like, fun laughter.

Matt told me to come downstairs and check this out… and then I saw this…

Swiffer Hockey Cleaning

… I couldn’t get over it.

They were playing Swiffer Hockey! My son Ben “invented” the game. He grabbed 2 Swiffer sticks and a baseball. He and Alex played for 30 minutes. My floors in the living room? Spotless. They kept making sure they were hitting every spot…. all the while, laughing and giggling and having (dare I say it!) a good time!

I had them explain the game to him the next day…

Gotta love boys cleaning.

Most of all – gotta love boys cleaning and having a good time!

Thanks Swiffer for the inspiration!
