10. Additional OILS AND INCENSE – I was reading that fruit flies hate incense. So if you’re an incense burner or do oils, make sure you keep on doing this and do it in your kitchen. What kinds of smells am I talking about when it comes to oils and incense? My personal faves? Lavender and peppermint are perfect for this.  I don’t know why, but for some reason fruit flies can’t stand the smell. Just easily burn the incense or oil… or even burn a candle around the house.

#8 works like a charm! The key is to add 1-2 drops of dish soap, and don’t swish it around which can produce suds. I found that if sudsy, the fruit flies are less attracted to it (I wonder if they’re more able to smell the soap this way). But a couple drops will break the surface tension so when they land, they can’t take off again & just sink to the bottom!

This is eye opening! I had no idea there were ways to get rid of fruit flies at all, never mind all these options. I’m really excited, as I noticed them for the first time yesterday for this year. I was trying to catch them, but they always get away.

These are great tips. A friend of mine whose a plumber has suggested the drain cleaner especially if you have a garbage disposal. The flies are attracted to the leftover food stuck in the disposal.
