How a Grilled Cheese Sandwich made my night!
A simple grilled cheese sandwich. It was ALL I was craving last night.
I was co-hosting a Rhody Mamas event with my cousin Jen last night at Learn All About It Toys. I got there around 6:15PM to help set-up and just didn’t have time to grab dinner beforehand. When the event ended around 9PM, I was STARVING! 5 Guys is next door, open till 10PM, so after I wrapped everything up, I went over to place an order. Let me preface this post with this — I love 5 Guys, I go there all the time. My sons love it, my husband loves it and I love it. It’s a place that’s “fast food,” but doesn’t really feel like fast food. When we’re in a quick jam after swim practice, it’s a good place to pop-in and get food.
The place was empty because it was so late (for Rhode Island!), I placed my order – grilled cheese with tomato and small fry. I sat down at one of the tables to wait for it to be done. As I was sitting there, I saw one of the guy’s working grab the trash can and move it to another guy working there. He took 3 bags and dragged them out back. Simple, right? Just a simple clean-up after a long day.
But it was what happened next.
The kid that originally grabbed the trash can and dragged it to the other kid then went over to the grill and finished making my grilled cheese WITHOUT changing his gloves. And the other kid who dragged out the 3 trash bags, got my fries and didn’t change his gloves either.
UGH! Talk about DISGUSTING.
I have to be honest, I didn’t say anything. They called my number, I grabbed my bag and left. I was too tired. I was too hungry. And I was too disgusted. I am going to call the place today to let the manager know what I saw, with just them there last night, I figured it was more worth telling someone in charge.
I called my husband on the way home, the first words out of his mouth, “Did you get your grilled cheese?”
I told him the whole story. Usually my husband is the kind of guy that is SO LAID back and nothing bothers him, but his response to this, “That’s disgusting. You didn’t eat it, right?”
NO WAY!
I drove home and planned on just making some soup or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, something totally easy.
The second I walked through the door I saw my husband in the kitchen making this…
And this was me at 10PM finally getting a grilled cheese with tomato…
It’s amazing how much a simple thing like making your wife a grilled cheese sandwich can make her DAY!
God I love this man.

That was really sweet of him! It’s disgusting that you saw your food made with no gloves by guys who had just touched the garbage. Makes you wonder how many people regularly get sick after eating there late at night!
oh man, that’s disgusting!!!!! But I’m so glad you got your grilled cheese in the end 😉
What an unbelievably sweet story! And I will NEVER be visiting that place again. It always skeeved me out a bit anyway. Got a burger there once and was not happy.
What a sweet husband! Those are the keepers!
What a guy … We’ve always said that it is the small, simple things that bring us the most joy! And, gross … I agree about calling and telling someone in charge, hopefully they will make it right!
Awesome. 🙂 You married a keepah! (Also, the first part of the story: GROSS!)
That’s the best!! You can’t beat it.
I swear a grilled cheese can fix any problem! That is so gross. I won’t be headed to that 5 guys any time soon.
It’s ALWAYS the simplest moments, the simplest things… that’s the miracle of life and love, beautiful, blessed-with-a-KEEPAH-husband daughter of mine! xoxox!
WHAT A KEEPER!!! Aso, SO gross of 5 guys. YUCK. PS, sorry I missed your event last night 🙁 xoxo
Super GROSS!!! Did you call? What happened!! We need an update! 😉
And yes, what a guy Matt is, making you your grilled cheese!!
