William’s 1st Swim Meet (My Heart Was Bursting…)

There are moments in life you want to remember.  Today I had one of them.

William’s 1st swim meet.

If you know me “in real life,” you know I love to laugh.  I live to laugh.  I love to make people laugh.  And I love funny things.  I try (my hardest) not to take life too seriously… my husband helps me with that a lot.  So… yesterday, as William was finishing up swim practice – the day before his big first swim meet – I was on the pool deck pacing back and forth like a nervous-mommy.

These thoughts were racing through my mind… “I need to teach him how to dive in… I wonder if he’ll be able to get his arms out of the water fast enough… What time do we have to be at the pool in the morning… What strokes is he swimming?” My husband – probably sensing and seeing my mommy-nerves building up, called me over to check out William’s brand new team bathing suit that were just passed out to the parents.

“Hey Audrey – you got to see how cute his suit is…” I sensed something in his voice.

And he held up the cutest little girl’s suit in the world!

Yup… by mistake, they sent William a girl’s suit.

Talk about making me laugh… and truly putting every worry out of my mind, I knew William would be fine.  There was no need to worry. Just how we would work around the “girl” suit mistake, he’d make it through his first meet!

And so, as we headed out this morning, William was not nervous one bit (I think being 5 years old helps!)… and I think that helped me, too.

He met up with his cousins in the parking lot of the swim meet…

Andrew, William and Taylor

He suited up and headed over to the pool to practice…

Watch out, ladies!

He swam some laps and got ready for the meet to begin…

Swimmer Boy!

And then got ready to go… (this is where my heart began to burst…)

My little man concentrating...

And… oh, my darling.  He swam 1/4 way down freestyle, decided he wanted to do backstroke, so flipped over.  His first lap!

But what got me the most about today… and put all the nerves behind me… was that William had the time of his life! He swam. He laughed. He had a smile from ear to ear ALL DAY LONG!

And truthfully… I couldn’t have been prouder…

Me... BEAMING!

    Audrey!!!!
That picture of him getting ready to dive in is just stellar. He looks like mini man with a mission. He’ll be a fish like his mama.

It’s those moments when we can see how our babies will be in the world, forging their own path through the water, that make a mama’s heart catch in her throat.

High fives to you and Matt.:)
