An update, with gratitude

I would like to thank everyone who has commented on my post about Sethy, asked me how he is doing, or done something extremely kind and thoughtful (I’m talking to you, Julie!) since we found out that he has bone cancer.

I guess I sometimes forget that there are many people out there who care about their dogs as much as I do; who think of their dogs as family members, too. Or, even if they don’t have dogs of their own, at the very least understand the love we dog lovers have for our beloved animals.

I am so grateful to all the people, many of whom have never even met Seth (or me, for that matter), who have reached out and/or have kept Seth in their thoughts.

Sethy was diagnosed on November 15, and I had to give the dogs to my ex-husband for his time with them just 4 days later, so I have not seen them since the 19th. When we separated and agreed we would share custody of Seth and Ryder, I knew we would have to deal with this type of thing eventually… but it does not make it any easier. After all, I want to be with my doggies at all times, always, but especially when I know one of them is sick.

I have been in communication with my ex-husband, of course, checking in to see how the dogs are doing… but it is not the same as being with them… playing with them… hugging them.

There’s really nothing that will make it all better, though, right? Since both of us love the dogs too much to give sole custody to the other, there are really only two options here: 1) get back together for the sake of the dogs, which is just not happening; or 2) continue with the arrangement we have in place.

And really, as imperfect as option #2 is, when there’s a day that we don’t have to share custody anymore… well, I don’t even want to think about it.

This post isn’t about finding a resolution; it’s something, as I have written about before, that cannot be resolved. I just have to look forward to tomorrow, when I will have my babies back with me, Brian and Tansy, and focus on making every moment with them special.

So thank you, again, for letting me know that Seth is in your thoughts and prayers. It means so much.

I love this photo of Seth! Jane, he is definitely in my prayers and thoughts – you all are. I can’t imagine receiving a diagnosis like this and then having to let him go again to your ex so soon. You are right, you will just have to focus on the time you have and the quality – it’s the best you can do. I just hope Seth is doing relatively okay and continues to have as many good days as possible. They *are* family and I’m always grateful to know and have people in my life that completely understand this. How can they not be? Enjoy tomorrow and each day beyond. Hugs to you, Brian and sweet beautiful Seth!

Honey… I can’t wait to see both Ryder and Sethy bounding into my kitchen… heading for their favorite spots… yes, even on the furniture here at Grandma and Grandpa’s house! I can’t wait to throw my arms around them and sneak them little snacks! I can’t wait to see Tansy dancing around Sethy, making him a really BIG brother… he is SO patient and SO kind to his little sisters. I can’t wait to plant big giant kisses on his beautiful face! I love them so very much… and I love you, too! xoxox!

I wish there was something I could write that would make this all better. But, the one thing I know is that Sethy is a very lucky dog to have a mom as great as you. And, he knows that too.

    Jane,
There is nothing like the love we have for our dogs. It’s so hard to watch our beloved ones age, basically right before your eyes. He is very lucky to be so loved. Thanks for the update.
