A Digital Mom Running a 1/2 Marathon

My brother (God love him) ran the 1/2 marathon with me on Sunday morning. He knew I was terrified of it, so when I first told him I signed up (way back in February), he said, “I’ll sign up, too!”

And he did. Just like that.

Believe me, he’s the best brother a girl could have.

Throughout the last 8-9 weeks he’s been texting me and calling me to check-in on my training. The training became non-existent 3 weeks ago, so I literally dodged his calls. I was afraid to tell him I was having doubts and was worried about running the 13.1 miles. i didn’t want to hurt myself. I didn’t want to not finish. And I didn’t want to look like a fool.

He assured me that I wouldn’t hurt myself, would finish and wouldn’t look like a fool. Call me crazy, but I believed him.

Sunday morning I met him at his house before the race around 6:30AM, he saw me walk in with my iPhone and headphones. He stopped dead in his tracks and said, “OK Audrey, one rule – no using that during the race.”

I was stone silent.

Um… yeah, that wasn’t going to be OK. Mama needs her iPhone. Mama needs her iPhone badly. And not for the music.

He saw the look in my eye… he knew this was a losing battle and not even try to go for it. So he didn’t (I told you he’s a great brother, right?).

Now you have to understand something about my brother. He’s on Facebook, yes… but he doesn’t tweet, blog, pin, video or anything. Social media isn’t something that’s that heavily involved in his life. So I had to prep him a little before the race. I think he got the hint when I stopped a stranger to take a photo of us pre-race and then I Instagram’d it and popped it up to Facebook (tagging him).

And so… you know you have a really good brother when he didn’t open his mouth once when I:

1) Made him stop at every mile marker and take a photo or a video of me at each one.

2) Started taking random photos of us during our race.

3) Actually texted a few people during the race who were texting “good luck” messages.

4) Shot and uploaded a video around mile 5 (and made him shoot it).

5) Tweeted throughout the race.

6) Facebook status updated every 4 miles.

7) And actually shot video of us during the last .1 miles into the finish line!

And if you don’t believe me… here was a photo one of the professional guys’ shot of me coming into the finish line. There couldn’t have been a more PERFECT picture of me shot during the race.

A digital mom, making it a digital 1/2 marathon!
