P&G everyday resolution for today?
Creating special nights with the boys.
I’m one of four kids; I have 2 older brothers and a younger sister. My sons are much closer in age than me and my siblings were (there’s 3 1/2 years between my oldest son and youngest son; whereas there’s 9 years between my oldest brother and my youngest sister), but in all honesty, the same questions have been asked to me that were asked to my parents some 25 years ago.
“How do you make every child feel special?”
I will preface this with the fact that my parents always made us feel special, but I’m talking special one-on-one time. With 4 children (or more), it gets very difficult to find alone time with each child… this I’m seeing firsthand right now. When I do get the chance to head to the market or go to the store with one of my sons, it’s as if I gave them a million dollars. I can really tell it matters. I can really tell they feel special. And I can really tell I need to do what my parents used to do – create special nights.
This is what my parents did back in the 1980‘s. Each month, one child got a special night. We got to go out with our parents to a special dinner (we got to pick) and then off to a special “something else” (again, we got to pick). When I had my turn, I used to always pick a restaurant called The Gristmill in Seekonk, MA and then I would pick the movies or a play or mini-golf or bowling. We got to pick anything we wanted! The best part about “special night” was that it was alone time with my parents. It was special. It was bonding time with just me and my parents and it meant so very much.
I’ll never forget being in the car heading to see the play Annie when I was about 12 years old. I just remember thinking it was so cool that I had my parents to myself. I knew it was just for one night, but I made the most of it. The nights were so special, that I remember them today with such fondness.
Now that my sons are older, I’m making the resolution to start special nights.
I want each of my sons to get alone time with me and my husband. I want them to have us all to themselves once a month, 3 times a year. They’ll be able to pick anything that they want to do (within reason), and it will be (hopefully) something they look more and more forward to each time they get their turn.
Special nights. It may seem like something simple, but it will leave a lasting impression forever.
It’s time to start!
