Capturing Swim Moments with my Canon EOS Rebel SL1 and GIVING ONE AWAY!!! **WINNER NOTIFIED!!!***

My son William loves to swim.Β  I mean, like… he wants to be Michael Phelps someday loves to swim.Β  When he was 4 years old, he hopped into the water and just took to it like a little fish.Β  He LOVED swimming lessons.Β  He LOVED jumping off the blocks and learning how to use a kickboard.Β  When he turned 5 years old, he asked me if he could join a swim team. I was hesitant because he was so young, but the coach told me, “If he can swim a lap without stopping, he can do it.” That’s all William needed to hear, the next thing I knew, he hopped into the water and swam one lap without stopping.Β  I’ll never forget the swim meet where I looked at my little William and thought, “Hmm… maybe this is his sport.” It was December 2011, he was swimming in a Christmas Classic Meet at a local YMCA and he had to swim the 25 yard Butterfly. Before the race, I walked him to the block (holding his hand) and whispered in his ear, “Remember… both arms out of the water at the same time, OK?” He smiled at me and nodded. I remember sitting there with butterflies in my OWN stomach! I was so nervous. Then something happened… he flew (literally) through the water, effortlessly bringing both of his arms out at the same time. I was shocked. Absolutely, positively shocked.

When he got out of the water, I gave him a big hug and he looked at me and asked… as only a little 7 year old could, “Do you think swimming is my superpower?”

I looked my little boy right in the eyes and said, “Yes, I think it is.”

Ever since then… my son has just LOVED swimming. He doesn’t want to miss a practice. He doesn’t want to miss a swim meet. He reads about swimmers online, subscribes to SPLASH magazine and has every kind of swimming app on his iPad imaginable. It’s pretty amazing seeing your son love a sport so much and really want to get better and better at it. It’s a beautiful thing to see.

But… it’s an even more beautiful thing to capture.

Usually I capture all my photos and videos on my iPhone. Yeah… not the best way to preserve memories and share them with the people I love. Usually the photos get grainy and the videos are blurry when I forward them along.

This past weekend William qualified for the 10 and under Long Course New England Championships at Harvard University.

This is a huge achievement for an 8 year old.

He qualified for 8 events: 50 meter butterfly, 50 meter free, 200 meter free, 100 meter fly, 100 meter back, 100 meter free, 50 meter back and 200 meter individual medley.

So this past weekend we went off for a 3-day trip (I’ve been trying to recover from my c-section for 2 1/2 weeks so I could make this meet!) to Cambridge, MA and got to hang out on the Harvard University campus for the swim meet. We were extra excited because my parents and my brother and sister-in-law were there with us (my nephew and niece were swimming, too!).Β  The most important thing for us was to capture all the moments.Β  He has been swimming for a long time training for this meet, so we wanted to make sure the memories were there for us to always look back at… especially, too since other family members couldn’t make it. We wanted to bring capture and share with them, too!

We’re working with Canon right now and they had me bring along the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 to capture our William and this special swim meet weekend.

What I loved about the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 was that it was extremely lightweight for me to carry around and capture moments. It’s small, but don’t be fooled by the size! I loved that it wasn’t bulky and too much for me. It was perfect for handling during a family weekend, too. I had my 4 other children at the swim meet, so my hands were full the whole time! I appreciated having a camera that didn’t weigh a ton! It was also VERY easy to use. I always get overwhelmed thinking about camera settings and everything… I’m an amateur when it comes to photography, so I need something that’s easy. The EOS Rebel SL1 was absolutely the perfect match for me. It was easy and extremely user-friendly. I was even able to give it to my mother and my sister-in-law to use a few times! They LOVED it!

Here are some amazing features, I did a ton of research before I used it because I wanted to know exactly what I would be handling. Again, I’m a total beginner when it comes to taking photos, but I LOVE to cherish memories. As a mom of 5, I know the necessity for having an incredible camera. It’s something you need. It goes beyond a want because these are the memories and moments that are worth living for… and it’s amazing to save, cherish and capture them all!

World’s smallest and lightest digital SLR

For ultra portability with a minimal footprint, the EOS Rebel SL1 is the world’s smallest and lightest digital SLR. Weighing in at approximately 13 ounces, the EOS Rebel SL1’s astonishingly compact size does not compromise its excellent performance as a member of the Canon EOS family: it features an 18.0 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor, the speedy DIGIC 5 Image Processor, a wide ISO range for both stills and video, and advanced AF performance. Designed for entry-level DSLR users, the EOS Rebel SL1 ensures performance and operation while still remaining compact.

Here are some of the photos from the weekend:

My FAVE photo! William is in Lane #1!
Backstroke for my William! Love seeing his arms in perfect motion!
This is my son William. This is how incredible the camera is… I was a GOOD maybe 15 yards away from him and I was still able to get incredible photos.
Perfect start!
1st Stroke off the Start!
Now this ONE was taken a good 50 meters away! He was just about to finish!
I let my sister-in-law take some photos to play with the camera, she LOVED it! She took some of her daughter (my niece) holding my Victoria!
Where we were sitting with the whole family!
And that’s a WRAP for the weekend!

Here’s the video of William’s swim… look at how AWESOME the camera does!

I’m literally obsessed with this camera! I’m taking it EVERYWHERE we go so I can continue to capture and share!

    Hi Audrey,

Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful daughter!

What a fantastic giveaway! I would definitely love to capture some end of summer memories with our two children, ages 11 and 13, before they start school again!

The time with our children goes by way too quickly, and it’s important not just to remember the memories, but to photographically recall them as well.

    Thank you!

    Hey Audrey,

I have stumbled upon your blog about a month before your beautiful daughter was born. I just love reading your blog and seeing all the photos of your family.

I am due September 23rd with my THIRD GIRL! It is so funny, because my husband and I have wanted a boy since number one. In all honesty though, I am just thankful for healthy babies and I trust God that he knows what he is doing.

Currently I have a $60 digital camera that I got from my mom for Christmas. The photos don’t come out as great as I would hope, but I make due. Plus, my smart phone broke this summer and I have not been able to get a new one yet.

I would love to capture some photos of the end of my pregnancy journey and my two beautiful girls. Arianna, 3 years old, and Alliah 2 years in September. I too have always wanted a big family. I am 1 of 8 and absolutely loved growing up in a big family, and always dreamed I would have a lot of kids too!

I would love to picture this time with my family as we are, just the 4 of us. Awaiting our new girl Lilah.

I love photos and on my facebook I just post so many of my family. Here is the link just in case you would like to see them!

    Hi Audrey,
    Thank you for the opportunity.
I would capture my sons and my daughter throughout the year. We haven’t had a new camera in years, so this would be a dream. I would love to capture the holidays – Halloween, Christmas, New Years, Birthdays, etc. It’s something I don’t do,but it’s something I really want to start doing. My mom did when I was a kid and would love to do the same for my family.
    Thanks,

I have always had a passion for photography, but never have been able to afford a good camera. When my 9 year old was born, I didn’t even have a digital camera of any sort. My biggest regret is not capturing more photos when she was little. I can’t go back in time and change the past, but if I were to win this amazing Canon EOS Rebel SL1 camera I would be able to capture every moment from then on. I love your website, and everything you do. Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity!!

I’dlove to win this beautiful camera. I live with my camera in my hand whether its the iPhone or y canon powershot. So I take pictures where ever I am. I’ve always wanted a dslr and have even started a saving one for it.

Later this year my sister will receive her PhD in Psychology and that would be an event I’d love to photograph and take video of. She will be the first PhD in our family. We are proud beyond words. January brings my cousin’s wedding and hopefully a family vacation in 2014.

Audrey! I love this heartwarming story about William! He is such a little fish. I LOVE Canon products and have been looking for a new camera to capture my niece’s own swimming adventures (she’s a year and 5 months) – she absolutely ADORES the water. It is a nice change from taking pictures on the phone, but great that it isn’t hugely bulky. I am going to be a new mommy in October and I am so excited to welcome my little girl. When my husband and I were married we haven’t had a camera to capture all of our little moments together and I don’t want to miss a second of my little girls life. Coming home from the hospital, her grandparents and great grandparents holding her, her first steps… and so much more. I am so excited to be a mommy. Thanks so much for this opportunity to win such a great prize.

I love taking pictures. The memories I would love to capture would be my 11-year-old son growing up from boy to wonderful young man. I want to capture all everything about him from his smallest to his greatest accomplishments. His funny faces, silliness, and his smile. I want to capture him during family events, vacations, and all types of celebrations from birthdays, holidays, vacations, and school events. A storyline from one day to the next giving all of us memories to cherish.

Hi!!! I would love to win this camera! I have two very active boys that I would like to capture. My son does swimming lessons as well, he is only 3, so the moves that he makes are very quick!! This camera would come in handy! Also when I try to take a picture of my 1 year old, he just walks towards the camera :), I need a quick snap shot since I don’t have many photos of my little man.
