Victoria had her very first swim lesson today at our local YMCA. Honestly, I’ve been looking forward to this swim lesson since I signed her up! I couldn’t wait to see her in her little bathing suit, with her little mermaid towel walking on the pool deck.
Victoria is… a true swim baby. Her first time on a pool deck was on July 16th, 2013… 7 days after she was born. Her brothers had a swim meet and I didn’t want to miss it. We sat and watched everyone swim and race and have a blast. I feel like chlorine is part of her DNA, she’s just used to it. It’s part of who she is and always will be. Our lives (right now) revolve around pool decks, so it’s something that she’s been used to throughout her whole life and actually feels comfortable around.
But today, today was HER day in the pool. Believe it or not, she’s never had a swim lesson before. I kept wanting to sign her up, but there was always something that got in the way of lessons. Either I signed up too late or the day I needed was taken or I just completely forgot. Victoria’s our 5th baby, so as every mom and dad knows with more than one child, the other kids sort of just have to come along for the ride. That’s been Victoria since Day 1.
But again, today was HER day.
When we walked on the pool deck, she sort of looked confused. No brothers. No kids she knew. No swim coaches to slap five. Just her, me and my parents… and a group of little kids she’s never seen before. I was worried she might not want to actually go in the pool, but that worry was put to rest when she grabbed my hand and I led her right on in. She didn’t hesitate. She didn’t stop. She didn’t cry. She sort of just was like, “Oh… finally!”
Finally was right. My little fish.
She kicked her feet. She blew bubbles. She laughed. She threw the swim balls. She jumped off the side (I couldn’t believe it!). She loved the water. She put her head back and let me hold her while she floated. It was a perfect first swim lesson. Perfect in every way for her.
My little swim fish.
And then afterwards we went to Dunkin Donuts for a celebration!
We had a BLAST!
What a great night.
