Camp Kesem at Brown University

Cancer effects a family, not just an individual. When my husband was diagnosed with a cancerous GIST tumor in his abdomen 5 1/2 years ago, our family was forever impacted. It scared us. It worried us. And most importantly – it changed us. In the past 5 years – as much as I hate to write this – I’ve known families deeply impacted by cancer. The loss of someone to cancer is heartbreaking and unfair and difficult to comprehend. Fortunately there are people and organizations like Camp Kesem out there for families… all there to help out.

Camp Kesem

The second I heard about Camp Kesem, I knew it was INCREDIBLE.  Camp Kesem is a nationwide community that supports children through and beyond their parent’s cancer.

Camp Kesem is an active community throughout the United States, driven by college students, supporting children through and beyond their parent’s cancer with free year-round services. Camp Kesem’s main program is a week-long sleepaway summer camp for kids whose parents have or have had cancer.

Camp Kesem

Camp Kesem provide free, week-long summer camps for the children in this truly underserved demographic. When a parent is diagnosed with cancer, the whole family is affected. For children, the carefree joys and adventure of childhood are replaced with new responsibilities, anger, guilt and the fear of losing (or loss of) a parent.

There are currently no other camps and few services available to these children in Rhode Island (where I live). Camp Kesem wants to create a fun environment for these kids, as well as help them create a support network with each other.

Camp Kesem is pleased to kick off their 2nd annual summer camp this August 21-25 at Camp Laurelwood in Connecticut! They have reached 40 campers, but have room for more, and they want this number to continue to grow in following years.

Please spread the word, this camp is such a way for children to create support systems and feel part of a tribe of people who understand them.

And if you’re curious to see if there’s one in your area – there are literally camps everywhere throughout the country. It’s something that really is available to all kids.
