Side Braid Bun Hair Tutorial

Looking for a side braid bun tutorial? I’ve got it for you right here. This is a style I love to do on on my daughter because it’s super easy to do, but looks like a million bucks. Whenever she wears her hair like this people always comment about it. I just think it’s a perfect style for any occasion (even weddings, proms and galas!).

When you’re trying to come up with styles for your hair or your child’s hair, simple is best. Unless you’re a hair professional, you don’t want to be spending a ton of time with a hairstyle. Quick and easy and simple is how I like it and the only way I roll when it comes to hairstyles.

This side braid bun is one of my favorite styles because it’s one of those styles you can really do fast, but as you get to do it more and more often… you’ll see that you can start perfecting it. You can add ribbons, bows or scrunchies. You can make the braid tighter or looser. You have some room to “play” when it comes to this style.

I’m going to walk you through this style step by step in this side braid bun hair tutorial that I shot with my daughter. My son Henry took the video and did his very best to showcase exactly what each step entails. I didn’t edit this video because I wanted you to see it in full, not chopped up and edited to make it look simple. It’s a simple style, so I wanted to showcase that.

Let me walk you through the steps below for the side braid bun:

  1. Brush hair and divide into 2 even sections.
  2. Step the one on your left to the side.
  3. Take the hair that’s left and wrap it into a bun. You will see that I just twist her hair and wrap it up like a coil. If you’re unable to do that style, create a bun style anyway that you can.
  4. Secure the bun into place.
  5. Take the other section and braid the hair.
  6. Secure the braid into place.
  7. Then take the braid and carefully wrap it around the side bun.
  8. After you’ve wrapped it, secure it into place.

Just for reference, the only hair elastics I will use in Victoria’s hair are the small rubber ones for kids. I love these! You can get 500 of then for $5.99 on Amazon. Check out here for the exact ones that I buy. I also love that they come in some fun and adorable color options for kids, too.

This style is so much fun and really easy to play with for your child. I know that when it comes to coming up and finding hairstyles that work, I gravitate towards a ton of bun hairstyles in the summer because it actually takes all of Victoria’s hair off of her back. I created a post on 5 Easy Bun Hairstyles for Girls just so you have a reference of some other bun styles, too.

Every single day on TikTok I create a different hairstyle and I’m having so much fun with it. I wanted to show moms that you don’t need to be an expert. You can just play around and have some fun with your hair or you child’s hair! Spending time with Victoria is so much fun for me, so when I can do something with her (like her hair!) it makes it even more precious.

Hope you enjoy this hairstyle for yourself or your child. This side braid bun is one that you will do again and again. The first time I did it on Victoria, my son Henry was the one that came up with the way to do it. I was trying to figure out the best way to hang the hair over and he suggested just making it a side bun so that the braid could dangle over.

You never know where your hair inspiration will come from! I owe Henry props for this style we came up with because I couldn’t figure out an easy way to make it work until he said something! I love it and I love having him on board for my styles and videos, too!

We just love coming up with hair content and really enjoy sharing it here on the blog! It’s one of those pieces of content that I’ve always just “done” on my own and never shared, so I personally love having this outlet now to be able to share them on. I don’t know why it took me so long to share my passion for hair content and styles!

Fashion and beauty is so much fun in the summer and I hope you take the time (even right now!) to enjoy it! I love showing that simple styles are sometimes the best ones for you to have some fashion and beauty fun for yourself! It’s a great way to feel (dare I say it) chic and normal again right now!

I love being able to come up with styles, but it’s so much fun to have someone ask about a particular style and have me walk them through it. Don’t forget that I do share hairstyles every single day on TikTok, so come on over!
