Easy Messy Bun for Long Hair

Looking for an easy messy bun for long hair? I’ve got you covered (literally). I’m all about a messy bun morning, noon or night, all week long. It’s an easy and simple hairstyle that works well for a casual look and (yes) even a fancy look, too.

When it comes to creating an easy messy bun for long hair, it’s all about making it simple. The beauty of a messy bun is that it’s MESSY! It doesn’t have to look perfect or be perfect. Every strand doesn’t have to be in place. It’s just a great and easy style for anyone.

Years ago before I knew it was called a messy bun, I would always call it an “impromptu bun.” I called it that because it was a quick bun I would do on the fly. It never looked perfect, but it looked good.

Now when it comes to creating an easy messy bun for long hair, you want to make sure you have some options because there are a few ways to perfect this easy hairstyle.

The best part about a messy bun? You can easily master a 1 minute messy bun. Your messy bun will look good with clean hair or dirty hair. I will even admit it, your messy bun looks even better the dirtier your hair actually is. It’s that kind of style.

You want to make sure you master the messy bun on top of head because this is where it actually looks the best. You can totally rock a low messy bun, but the higher it is the better it looks.

I wanted to talk you through how to actually create a messy bun for long hair, so I created a YouTube video with 2 hair tutorials. The video is less than 5 minutes, so don’t worry – it won’t take a long. These are the kinds of hairstyles I LIVE for because they’re not only easy, but quick.

  1. Easy Messy Bun for Long Hair Style #1 – Pull your hair into a gigantic ponytail and before you start to add elastic bands around it, just pull through 1/2 way and then wrap the elastic band again around the small portion. You’ll see in the video what I mean. Then just pull strands to make it as messy as you want it to be.

  1. Easy Messy Bun for Long Hair Style #2 – Actually put a ponytail on the top of your head. Divide the ponytail into 2 sections. Take an elastic and pop it over the divided sections. You’ll make a little arch with the sections (as you’ll see in the video). Pull the hair as desired and then take the extra sections and wrap them around.

The beauty of these 2 styles is that even though I’m “walking” you through them, you can (and will) make them as messy as you want them to be. You can literally make them exactly how you want them to look. They’re super easy to mess around with and create.

I just love doing a messy bun because it works for so many different occasions. You could wear one to the bus stop or school drop-off (which I normally do). You could wear one to the gym or yoga. You could wear one out and about doing errands. You could wear it to work (just add a headband or hair wrap). You could wear it out to dinner or on a date.

It’s a versatile hairstyle that just works. It also works for any age. It’s not one of those styles that you can only get away with when you’re young. I love wearing a messy bun and I love when I see my mom rocking one, too.
