Fashion Advice – Add on a BELT

A Fashion NO-NO. I will come clean. This past summer while I was in line at an Old Navy waiting to pay, I struck up a conversation with a very nice older woman. We chatted for about a good 5 minutes when she finally turned to me, touched my arm and said, “You have had such an easy summer.” I looked confused. As she could tell. She went on, “With the weather and all, I was pregnant myself in the summer many years ago.”

I was shocked. Pregnant? Me? Um, nope. I wasn’t. I was sure of that. I guess the worst part about the story is that she actually asked me when I was due — and I was STILL IN SO MUCH SHOCK that I answered, “December.”

(*Disclaimer: In defense of myself – I was wearing an empire waisted dress.)

She was just SO KIND and I knew if I told her that I wasn’t pregnant she would literally die of humiliation (kind of like me at that moment) right there on the spot.

Anyways… which brings me to my fashion advice today. Some of the trends right now in tops, especially blouses aren’t the most flattering for moms. Dare I even say it, but most of the blouses I’m seeing channel some maternity fashions style. So what’s a mom to do — that’s not pregnant? Simple. ADD A BELT!

    A) I don’t wear empire waisted anything for that very reason.

    B) Because of my weight issues, belts don’t help.

    C) Meaning there’s no hope for me.

Never, EVER mention that you think a woman is pregnant.

I was at a party just last night and the leader of the party looked like she was expecting, but even though I was quite sure she must be pregnant, I did NOT mention it until I heard her say that she was…just to spare any possible hurt feelings or embarrassment.

I wish everyone could learn this lesson. Sorry it happened to you, Audrey – you are so tiny anyhow.

*And I have this adorable baby-doll sweater shirt/dress that I’ve worn with leggings, that is so cute, but I don’t think it would work with a belt. Not sure how I could make it less-pregnancy suggesting.

can you wear a belt with a shirt dress that had pockets? is that too much bulk?

audrey you are so nice. it is so funny that you actually told her your “due date”. way to think on your toes and spare her a moment of embarassment. (after she embarassed you)

I don’t know if I am thin enough to pull off the belt – I love the idea though!

I love you so much for telling her December. I would have done the same for my sake and hers! (But also, that is why I never assume women are pregnant unless they’re actually giving birth at that moment.)

I still cannot get over that someone thought you were pregnant! It was great seeing you last night, only you can easily make the lab coat look so fashionable!

I love the idea of wearing empire waist shirts with a belt. I’ve gotten rid of so many cute, CUTE tops because I didn’t want the exact same thing to happen!
