Navigating the New Year

It’s the first Monday of 2013. Is this the day I’m supposed to get my act together for the coming year? Or did that ship sail on January 1? Either way, I think I’m failing at starting the New Year with a bang (minus Brian’s truck catching on fire on New Year’s Day).

I’m seeing a lot of Facebook status updates, blog posts and tweets about people owning the New Year, and I guess I’m just feeling a little behind the 8 ball on that one. I haven’t cleaned out my refrigerator, meal-planned for the month, organized my office, cleaned my bedroom closet, knitted a scarf, started a book club, climbed a mountain – or even created a new workout playlist on my iPod. Actually, I think I’m still trying to figure out where 2012 went because it seems like just yesterday that I was walking down the aisle to marry Brian, and yet that was almost 6 months ago.

I love social media, but sometimes being so super aware of what everyone else is doing at every moment makes me feel like everyone has their act together but me. So here we are, a quarter of the way into the first month of the new year, and I feel like I’ve been left at the starting line while everyone else is well on their way in the race.

And yet, I know it’s not a race. Life is not a competition. Intellectually, I do know that. It doesn’t matter who loses 10 lbs., or who has kids and who doesn’t, or who has the biggest house, or who gets to go on the most exotic vacation.

Sometimes I just have to remind myself of this.

I don’t know if this post has a point. I guess it mostly serves to allow me to forgive myself for any perceived New Year shortcomings. No, I didn’t start a winter cleanse. No, I’m not pregnant yet. No, my house is not spotlessly clean. But it’s okay. I will focus instead on being content on this early January day, and remind myself to just let things happen when they happen because that’s when they’re supposed to happen.

Right?

You are SO right about social media and how it changes our perception of ourselves. It is like we are on constant competition…but it is totally created by ourselves right?

You aren’t alone still standing at the starting line though. I’ve done some “let’s make this the best year EVAR!” things…but we have an entire year ahead of us! Why plow through all our goals in the first week. 😉

Jane, I love you and your honesty…remember to take things with a grain of salt…NO ONE has their act together and I think you are awesome!!!!

This post has more of a point than those posts about “owning” 2013. Personally, I’m just hoping to get through each day, content just being content, even if the cottage cheese in my fridge is expired. Low expectations? Maybe. But realistic? Definitely.

Perfection is a myth… knowing your faults makes you pretty awesome! Happy new year… and sorry about the truck. 🙁

Don’t worry about who has the biggest house, if you ever feel like your house isn’t good enough, just stop over and visit ours! 😉 It may be the smallest in the state!

I love this post, and your attitude, and I’m pretty confident that you’ll have an amazing 2013!!

Great post, Jane, and I totally agree with you. I must be really behind too, because I don’t do New Year resolutions. It’s seem weird to me to start something on a certain day…especially with the rest of the world! If I feel like I need to improve on something I just start immediately. Why wait? I think we’re all going to have a great 2013, and I wish you, Brian and all the doggies the best!
