Things To Do With Your Grandparents

My kids are blessed to have both sets of grandparents who love to do things with them. One set of their grandparents lives 10 minutes away, the other lives 10 hours away. The same is true (still) for both sets, it’s important to have things to do with them. When my in-laws come to visit, it drives me crazy when we just sit. I like to do things, whether it’s outside or inside. I always feel like it’s a waste of a trip if we have nothing planned for them to do.

As you’re thinking about things to do with your grandparents, it’s important to think about things that everyone can do together. It’s also important to make sure your family members (of all ages) can join in on the fun, too. Start with coming up with fun things and fun ways to occupy your time that you know everyone will enjoy.

Don’t just wait for grandparents day to do something with them, every day can be grandparents day!

They might be worried about the younger generations and coming up with meaningful ways and fun things to do together, but the best part is, there are so many things to chose from when it comes to being together. These ideas are for younger kids and older kids. I’m excited to share some fun ideas for you to do that will ensure a fun time and a great time had by all.

Fun Things To Do with your Grandparents

Go for a walk. This is a great option for any time of year. It’s especially nice in the summer when the weather is nice and you can enjoy the outdoors. This is great with young kids or the entire family because it gets everyone moving. You can have some fun with this one by creating a scavenger hunt with them, too.

Have a picnic. Another great outdoor activity, picnicking is perfect for grandparents who love to cook! They can prepare all of the food while you set up the picnic blanket and enjoy the meal. It’s the little things that leave the biggest impact, and a simple picnic in the backyard is a fun way to bring the younger and older generations together.

Miniature Golf. This is a fun activity to do with younger children. Head to a local mini golf place and enjoy time together as you make your way through the fun course. One of the best parts is seeing everyone get excited about trying to make it through the golf course.

Video Games. If you can’t fight them, join them! This is one for the photo albums! šŸ™‚ Teach your grandparents how to play some of your favorite video games. This is a fun way to bridge that generational gap. And hey… you never know, they might even like them!

Play games and create puzzles. Board games, card games, puzzles, jigsaw puzzle, or even just some friendly competition with sports can be a lot of fun for both you and your grandparents. Find a great and fun game that everyone loves to do (my fave used to be go fish). Some of these games are activities that can be done right at the dinner table after your meal.

Watch TV or a movie. A movie night is always a safe bet! Sometimes it’s nice to just relax and watch something together. Grandparents will love getting to share some of their favorite shows or movies with you! Find different things to watch they will be loved and enjoyed by all. Have a wonderful time finding something that everyone can enjoy together. When it comes to things to do with your grandparents, this is an easy one.

Visit a Local Library. Reading is always a fun thing to do with grandparents. Take a trip to the library and pick out a new book together. The library always has fun activities going on, too. Maybe pick out something fun to do.

Craft Time. If your grandparents are into crafting, find an easy craft for you to do with your kids at home.

Ice Cream Sundae Night. My parents do this with my kids and they LOVE it. Have an ice cream sundae night. This is a fun way for your kids to create their very own ice cream masterpiece. The one rule my mom has is that they can’t eat the ice cream on the couch!

Bake something together. Grandparents love baking, and they’ll appreciate having someone to help them in the kitchen. You can make cookies or a cake for dessert later on too! This is a special time for grandparents because it’s so much fun to be in the kitchen, just having a great time while you’re creating something special together.

Create a Family Tree. If you’re looking for a fun way to teach your grandparents about some family history, create a family tree with them. This is a cute and adorable way to bridge together the past and the present together. It’s also a great opportunity to talk to them about people they never had the chance to meet from their family.

Go for a drive. This is a great way to see the sights and enjoy some conversation. If your grandparents live close by, you can even walk or ride bikes together. I love driving because you can play some games in the car with the kids, too. Sing some of your favorite songs, which will add some additional fun.

Visit a museum or park. These are both great options if you’re looking for something educational to do with your grandparents. They’ll appreciate getting to learn something new while spending time with you! This might not be the best thing to do with small children, but it is something that will be fun to do as they get older. Whether it’s a theme park, local park, water park or kid museum, this will be fun!

Go shopping. Grandparents will love getting to buy something for themselves or even just looking around at all the things they could purchase if their budget allowed it. They might even find some great deals too! This was one of my personal favorite activities to do with my grandmothers. This is a great time to get a special treat from your grandparents that maybe your parents won’t get you! šŸ˜‰

Attend an event together like a concert or sporting event. Grandparents enjoy going to events like these, and it’s a great way to spend some time with them. My sons love going to football games and basketball games with their grandfathers. It’s nice to see the generations coming together and bonding. It’s a great place for both of them to enjoy and a perfect time to bring together passions that they both enjoy. This is better for tweens, teens, and young adults.

Have a party. Grandparents love celebrating, and what better way to do it than by throwing them a party? They can invite all their friends and family, and you can help them prepare food and decorations. This is a fun activity that can be done right in your own backyard. You don’t have to rent a fancy place. If you come from large families, it will be nice having everyone together for a special event .

Go on a trip. Grandparents will love this one the most. If you have the time and money, go on a trip together! You can visit a new city or country, or even just explore your own state or province. This will be a good time for all if you find a location that everyone is excited to go to. Maybe it’s by the beach or on the slopes! Maybe it’s just a day trip to a local city near you.
